A Little Footwork, A Little Self-Care, and a Lesson in Humility

My wife and I decided to do something a little different the other day… We headed to a local pedispa and treated ourselves to pedicures. Yes, that’s right, I got a pedicure! And it was awesome!

My wife actually encouraged me to try one for the first time a few years ago while we were in Maui, Hawaii, and I’ve been a fan ever since. Was this quite the same as a five-star resort spa? No. But the results were almost identical, and the price was about a third of the cost! Hard to argue with that!

Honestly, we both needed it. Sometimes life gets busy, we get caught up in everything we’re doing, and the simple things that help us slow down and take care of ourselves get pushed to the bottom of the list. I’m glad we finally made the time.

There was something pretty enjoyable about sitting side by side, relaxing, and letting someone else take care of us for a change. No agenda, no rushing off to the next thing. Just a little time together and some much-needed self-care.

But as I sat there, I couldn’t help thinking about a much deeper connection.

In John 13, we read about the Savior washing the feet of His apostles. It was the evening before His crucifixion, and Jesus did something that must have caught them by surprise. He took a basin of water, wrapped a towel around Himself, and began washing their feet.

Think about that for a minute. The Savior, the Master, the Son of God, knelt down and performed what was considered a servant’s task. Peter even questioned Him, struggling to understand why the Lord would do such a thing.

But Jesus was teaching them something far greater than cleanliness. He was teaching humility, love, and service. He was showing them that greatness isn’t found in being served, but in being willing to serve.

I’ve always loved that story, but sitting in that pedispa gave me a slightly different perspective.

Our experience wasn’t exactly the same, of course. We were the ones being served, not doing the serving. And I’m especially grateful to London Nail Bar for accommodating our last-minute appointment and taking such good care of us. It’s always nice to support a local business that makes you feel welcome.

The experience reminded me how important it is to allow ourselves to slow down, appreciate the people who care for us, and recognize that some of the most meaningful expressions of love come through simple acts of service.

It also made me think about how often we have opportunities to do those little things for the people we love. We don’t need a basin and a towel to make someone’s day better. Sometimes it’s a helping hand, taking something off someone’s plate, listening when they need it, or simply making time for one another.

I’m grateful we took the time for ourselves. Grateful for my amazing wife, grateful for a little pampering, and grateful for the reminder that even something as ordinary as caring for our feet can point us toward something extraordinary.

Maybe we all need a little more of that in our lives: a little less rushing, a little more serving, and a whole lot more love.

And yes, our feet are looking pretty good, too! 🙂
